RHTLaw Taylor Wessing’s Managing Partner Tan Chong Huat shared his views in this week’s topic in the Business Times’ weekly column, Views from the Top.
In response to the queries as to what positives can businesses take from the upcoming Personal Data Protection Bill and other initiatives to protect consumer data and privacy, and how it will impact companies' use of social media and other online/mobile strategies, he is quoted saying:
“The proposed Personal Data Protection Bill gives businesses a certain level of certainty and clarity on how to manage the collection and use of personal data. In balancing the need to protect privacy of individuals against the use of personal data for legitimate purposes, it is laudable that the government has set out guidelines on the collection and use of personal data, having taken into account the views and concerns of the public.
The proposed Do-Not-Call Registry, in particular, is a novel concept in Singapore that will require parties to revise their marketing strategies accordingly.”
The Firm’s Data Protection Practice Group is led by Intellectual Property & Technology Partner, Mr Wun Rizwi.
